100 years ago this week (1918)

“A near sea tragedy occurred early yesterday morning in the vicinity of Point Wilson when the power fishing schooner Wireless crashed into the naval patrol boat S.P. 772.”

The Puget Mill Co. in Port Ludlow advertises: “During the present crises we are conforming our business as near as possible to the wishes of the government and we ask all our partners to kindly aid in conserving the food supply of this county. To do this you will get more for your money by dealing with us, this has been proven by the fact that so many people travel quite a distance to do their trading here.”

60 years ago this week (1958)

The Leader office has been designated as City General Election headquarters where returns will be tabulated next Tuesday evening.”

“More than thirty people gathered at the Elks Club Colonial Room Tuesday night to give early study to a proposed Summer Arts Festival for Port Townsend.”

“Theme Song” is chosen as the 1958 Rhododendron Festival theme. Other nominations included “Land of Plenty,” “The Fantastic Future,” “Springtime,” “Famous Firsts” and “Notes in Rhody.” The winning entry actually was first suggested in 1957.

30 years ago this week (1988)

“A petition containing 146 signatures asking the Jefferson County Commissioners for action on the cleanup of a Chimacum business has been referred to the county prosecutor.”

The final First Friday Gallery Walk is March 4. Next month, the art gallery tour becomes the First Saturday Gallery Walk.

Port Townsend High School senior Kellie Dillingham is named Nisqually League MVP. The Redskin girls go to state for the sixth time in coach Chuck McClurken’s 12-year coaching stint.
