On August 31, 2024, Robert Lee “Cougar” Garten passed away at his home in Shine. He was dearly loved by his family who were continually with him during the last few days. Cougar was born in Port Townsend and grew up in Shine where he lived most of his life. His family ties to the community go back to around 1850; Cougars great great grandparents, John & Mary Cooper, were among the very early pioneers in Jefferson County.

After graduating from Chimacum High School, Cougar chose a career in construction, he was a gifted heavy equipment operator. He had many interests, his family came first and riding his motorcycle was near the top of the list. He learned to fly during his years in Alaska. Cougar developed Garten Estates north of Shine naming the streets after his mother Leone and his father George. In his 70’s Cougar fulfilled a lifelong dream to write a book about the community he loved. HIs book “Shine” sold hundreds of copies and introduced many a Shine resident to the history of the community.

Cougar was preceded in death by his son Mike in 1993. He is survived by his remaining children: Carrie, Rob, Chip, and Hawn, his sister Sally, nephews George & Bill Garten and Steve Osburn, and a large loving extended family including grandchildren, great grandchildren, and grandnieces & nephews.

Cougar’s book “Shine” shares his life and the lives of many early residents. It is a fitting legacy for a man who truly loved his family, friends, and community.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 PM on October 12, at the Port Ludlow Community Church. Burial will be in the Shine Cemetery.
