Kim Vogley, a Jefferson County resident, took first place in the Make It With Wool National Competition.
The contest is an annual design-and-sewing competition sponsored by the American Sheep Industry.
Now in its 75th year of the competition, the 2022 National Finals were held in late January at the Sheraton Hotel in San Diego, California.
The contest challenges entrants’ creativity to showcase the breath and versatility of wool, a major criteria of the judging, in garments sewn and appropriate for the age and lifestyle of the contestant.
Vogley placed first in the Adult Division (age 25 and older).
The award-winning dress was an original design by Vogley. Calla lilies are a common theme on both the coat and dress, a symbol commonly offered to express sympathy and promise. Calla lilies are embroidered on the coat, felted on the coat lapel, and appliquéd on the dress, utilizing a white on white approach, adding and furthering the cohesion of the ensemble.
Vogley said she will spend this next year actively encouraging sewists to create well-constructed wool garments to enter in next year’s Make It With Wool Contest.
