Life in Ludlow: From a Bellhop to a Concert

Spring is here and last weekend you probably moved at least one clock in your home or car ahead one hour to participate in Daylight Saving Time. Harry Truman once said, “Daylight Saving Time, a monstrosity in timekeeping!” An anonymous sage also noted, “Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket.”

The School of Hospitality Business Management at Washington State University recently held its annual “Bellhop” celebration of the hospitality program that began in the 1940s and includes recognizing the new inductees into their Hall of Fame. Local luminary Terry Umbreit, an Emeritus Professor, is the latest member, so be sure to congratulate him or buy him a drink when you see him.

The 2019 edition of the East Jefferson Rotary Rose Sale is now in full swing. Contact your favorite Rotarian to order your dozen(s) of red, yellow, pink or white roses. At the same time, the Port Townsend Sunrise Rotary is selling their  “Running of the Balls” tickets with a $2,000 prize, while the PT Noon Rotary Club is hosting their “Mad Hatter” dinner and auction. One would think all the Rotarians do is raise money, a notion which certainly has an element of truth. However, all of the money raised goes to make our world locally, nationally, and internationally a better place. There are not many better places to invest your time and money. By the way, did you see that picture of Port Townsend Rotary President David Engle on the front page of this paper last week? Wow! It puts a lot of us to shame.

The annual Port Ludlow Yacht Club training day will be held on Saturday, April 6 at the Beach Club. The program focuses on water safety, boat handling, and navigation tips. The keynote speaker is local maritime leader, Jake Beattie, Executive Director of the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend. The day starts with a breakfast snack and registration at 8:30 AM and goes until 4 PM, when the attendees are invited to the Wreck Room for a post seminar beverage. Additional information and a registration form can be obtained from Theresa Muir at 360-344-8254 or rearcom1@plyc.us

The second edition of the revived Port Ludlow Spring Follies was recently held at the Bay Club. Several local singing groups of various levels of skill presented a program to benefit the Chimacum High School Choir. They are raising funds to enable them to go to Disneyland to perform. They also provided the best of the performances! Just one man’s non-expert opinion.

BJ and I got a call last week from the 10-year-old grandson asking about our heroes. He has a school project requiring him to talk to a few family and friends and find out who their heroes are and why they feel that way. BJ answered with her friend from AARP tax preparation, Karen Jensen. Karen passed away last year but I’m sure many of you remember her as one of the leaders of the program to fill backpacks with food each week for kids to take home from school to provide them with nutritious food for the weekend while not in school. The whole exercise prompts thoughts about just who are the heroes one could identify.

It sounds like the monthly pancake breakfast program at the Bay Club is doing great. I am planning to get to the next one and will see you there. The annual Saint Patrick’s Day dinner is at the Beach Club this weekend. GBF Catering is providing the dinner so you don’t even have to bring a dish like a regular monthly potluck dinner.

Given the Daylight Saving exercise last weekend and Saint Patrick’s Day this weekend it may be appropriate to remember the Irish Proverb: “If you get a reputation as an early riser, you can sleep to noon.”

Love a curmudgeon and have a great week!
