Lewis Aaron (Spike) Morello passed away from complications of Dementia on Sunday, October 13. His longtime friend and partner, Sharon Hoare, was by his side. He was born June 26, 1943 to Jean Lewis and Lewie Morello.

Lew attended schools in Port Townsend graduating in 1961. He went on to Peninsula College, and Western before joining the Navy.

In 1968 Lew married Christine Hertlein. They had two sons, Aaron and Andrew. They divorced in 1975.

Lew became a Pharmacist in the Navy and spent 20 years serving on both the East and West coasts. His favorite times were those deployments on various ships, including the maiden voyage of the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy. While in port in Monaco, Lew had the opportunity to dance with Mrs. Rose Kennedy.

Lew was always one to champion causes for those in need and while in Arlington, VA., was instrumental in organizing a letter writing campaign among his fellow shipmates. This was to convince Congress not to lower their wages as had been proposed. The campaign was very successful, and Lew met several congressmen while hand delivering the hundreds of letters. He was delighted when they commented “Oh you’re the prolific letter writer!”

While stationed on the East coast Lew met and married Lois Venarchick. They had one son, Michael. Lew retired from the Navy and moved his family back to Port Townsend and into the cabin he loved so much, at Beckett Point. They divorced many years later. Lew loved music of all types and could play any instrument by ear. He also enjoyed woodworking and after retirement from the Navy, found a job at Edensaw Woods where he remained for 20 years. Oh how he loved that job and all his customers!!!

Lew will be missed by many; his sons Aaron (Catherine), Andrew (Lisa), Michael (Tonia), brother Tom (Janet), nephews Nathan (Renee), and Joey; granddaughters Sara, Madi, Laurel, Arabella, and Maia; grandson Jonathon; great nephew/niece Nathan and Lea; great grandson Issac, and so many of his classmates with whom he was very close.

There will be a Celebration Potluck for close friends and family.

Rest well dearest Lew, and “Anchors Aweigh”!
