LETTER: Support your neighbor; support proposed levy

Posted

Ask almost anyone to name life’s most basic needs, and the response will be “food and shelter.”

But what happens when shelter can’t be found? As a community, how will we respond when our neighbors and friends are unable to find decent, affordable places to live?

Right now, there’s a family camping in a field outside of town. They may see this as a great adventure in July, but are likely to have a much different response on a chilly November night.

If we ask, “Who is our neighbor?” we must answer that we are all neighbors. And, as neighbors, we can all do our part in making sure that everyone in Jefferson County can find housing that is safe and affordable.

The county housing proposal would establish a local fund to create and preserve affordable housing from a levy of 36 cents per $1,000 assessed property value.

It’s important to support this now, as the proposal comes before the county commissioners, and also on the November ballot.
