LETTER: SSNW is being maligned

Posted

On June 26, I attended the county commissioners’ meeting to hear community input regarding Security Services Northwest [SSNW].

I was appalled at the misinformation presented by the Discovery Bay Alliance and other community members.

One speaker, who claimed to be a Vietnam veteran, expressed his disgust for the use of full-automatic weapons at SSNW Fort Discovery. I’m a former Marine and served three tours in Vietnam. I assure you that I, and any of my fellow Marines, can distinguish between full-automatic weapons and semi-automatic weapons.

I’ve lived directly across the bay from Fort Discovery since 1987. Fully automatic weapons are not used at Fort Discovery. This is another example of calculated misinformation to deliberately mislead the public and the county commissioners.

While listening to community members criticize SSNW, I thought of the most recent shooting at the Republican baseball practice in Washington, D.C. If it were not for the armed and trained security detail present at the practice, many people would have died.

In my opinion, the criticism directed at SSNW is not because of a noise issue but another attempt to control guns.

I applaud SSNW for their service to our community, our state and our country. I’m proud to have SSNW as my neighbor and as part of our community.
