It is depressing to read about the never-ending verbal sparring of our political parties and elected officials, and lately I’ve been wondering if anything really gets accomplished.
In that frame of mind, it was not an executive order or cry for investigation that brightened my day one Saturday morning.
It was a modest but meaningful local happening. One of our leading Jefferson County elected officials was leading by his action.
No fanfare, photographers, tweets or Facebook entries here: Sheriff Dave Stanko, on his day off, was with a small group of Port Townsend Rotary Club volunteers wearing a safety vest, gloves and carrying a large garbage bag.
They were picking up a couple hundred pounds of roadside litter along Discovery Road from Mill Road to the intersection with Jacob Miller and then all the way to the dump. Two hours later, they were still at it.
It’s another reason to love this great community.
