LETTER: PT is a welcoming, recycling community

Thank you for the best vacation ever. I’ve never been in a more welcoming community, where people of all ages bent over backwards to help a visitor. You guys are amazing.

I loved your art galleries, restaurants, coffee shops, secondhand stores, food co-op, pharmacies, The Rose Theatre, the museum, Quaker, Unitarian and farming communities.

As a retired waste reduction/recycling educator, I loved that your curbside recycling program sorted recyclables into a truck with separate compartments for each item.

Too bad that Port Angeles has fallen for faux recycling called single stream, the collection process whereby all recycling is mixed together in a single compartment truck. It is a horrible mess that was instigated by huge garbage-hauling companies.

Many municipalities (and some nonprofits) followed suit because “everyone else was doing it.” Everyone else would have been smart to give garbage haulers contractual instructions rather than total control of their recyclables. Everyone else would’ve been smart to stay in direct contact with end users, companies trying to make new products from our recyclables. If we are going to pay for recycling, we need to provide end users with the best feedstock possible, so they can actually make new stuff from our recyclables.

Instead of lowering the bar, I hope PT will do what it already does in so many ways, raise the bar.

I hope you all will pass a recycling accountability and transparency ordinance, as well as get in direct contact with end users and tell them you want to provide them with the best-quality feedstock in the nation.
