The county commissioners are trying to sell property owners on a so-called home opportunity fund for affordable housing. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck, it is subsidized housing.
Affordable housing was a concern when I started building homes 20-plus years ago.
Jefferson County commissioners signed on to the Growth Management Act (GMA) in 1990. The GMA was supposed to be the umbrella to control and manage growth.
When the county signed on, there were 20,659 people in the county. Today, there are about 30,000 people.
The average yearly population increase is 346 people. Hardly a thriving community?
The GMA worked in Jefferson County, no or low-paying jobs and minimal business opportunity. Jefferson County is a rural kibbutz, a Bernie Sanders oasis in Port Townsend and subsidized by retirement dollars.
If you are concerned about the so-called opportunity fund, express your concerns to the county commissioners and vote no for subsidized housing.
