LETTER: Please keep the city streets cleaner

Posted

I was downtown this weekend and was horrified at the state of our fair city of Port Townsend.

Trash was all over the streets, in the landscaping, and overflowing from the trash can. This state seems to be more and more common around here.

With the increase in people and economy, can we not maintain our city in its beauty and splendor? Being a beachfront city, the importance of keeping trash off the ground is even more important, especially since the wind can quickly move trash into the water.

The primary responsibility lays with the city.

Why can they not have employees servicing downtown and the trash cans regularly? Why do they not have more people available during large weekends like this to keep our city clean and healthy?

Does anyone see city employees doing cleanup work downtown? It seems too infrequent.

With the increase in city revenue, can they not spend a little more on trash pickup and prevention? Is this work keeping our city clean not one of the most important city expenditures, especially because the cost is so minimal?

City, please step up cleaning and trash removal in congruence with the increase in our population.
