LETTER: Keep that Scotch broom in check

If you own property, whether a tiny yard or acres upon which Scotch broom is growing this note is especially for you.

As I watch our county once covered with native plants and flowers becoming full of more Scotch broom, (Cytisus scoparius) each year, I wonder why property owners don’t feel responsible for keeping this invasive plant in check.

The Scotch broom actually changes the acidity of the soil making it more difficult for other plants to grow thus continuing the cycle of more broom.

Each plant can produce more than 40,000 seeds, which is why it’s so important to keep it in check.

It’s very easy to pull up the young tiny shoots by hand. I’ve been doing this on my walks. But the larger bushes are a different story.

There is are tools for this, such as “The Uprooter” or the “Weed Wrench” made for pulling these stubborn invasives. Check out Washington State University.

I don’t understand why more folks don’t clip or cut existing plants before seeds form, rather than letting them multiply. Now would be a good time for this.

Come see, appreciate vintage cars June 19

The Rakers Car Club of Port Townsend would like to thank the Rhododendron Festival Association and congratulate all for another amazing event and parade on May 20.

The Rakers Club is always honored to support events in Port Townsend and the surrounding areas.

While one reader (letter in May 31 issue of The Leader) may not appreciate vintage cars and their artistic beauty, many other people in town love to see these cars in the wonderful events Port Townsend provides to its community. One group that may be loud and proud does not speak for all vintage car lovers.

The Rakers make an abundant effort to be respectful to everyone, and as president of the club, I invite those who are interested in vintage beauties to come to the upcoming Rakers Car Show on June 19, 2017 at Memorial Field.
