Even if it took me awhile to finally sit down and write this letter, I noticed right away, back in December, that Paula McDonald retired from Safeway.
I’ve been a resident of Port Townsend for the past 22 years, and Paula has been a very big figure of our shopping trips. She would always greet us with a smile, take interest in our lives (I’ve even cried on her shoulder at times), and she also picked up some French from my sons over the years. When they were little, they would yell, “Bonjour, Paula!” and insist on having her be our cashier and be so delighted when she would answer in her best French.
It will take me awhile to stop looking for you when I’m shopping at Safeway.
You are very much missed, Paula, and I wished I had a chance to tell you that in person before you left, but it’s high time for you to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. All the best to you.
