LETTER: Bigger chariots didn’t save Rome

I went to the Navy’s open house at the Fort Worden USO on Dec. 5.

Past the glossy photos, the dozens of Navy staff and consultants glad handing everyone who walked through the police-guarded door, the slick posters with their charts of “day-night average sound level” and flight path maps, the Orwellian claims that adding the flights of 36 more jets “won’t contribute to climate change” and that their noise “may effect, but is not likely to adversely affect” endangered species, my thoughts drifted past this deceitful squandering of our tax dollars to justify an infinitely larger squandering of human, ecosystem and financial resources, and came to rest on this: bigger chariots didn’t save Rome.
