The first day our Realtor handed us the keys to our home here in 2011, a driver passing a semi on Beaver Valley Road forced me to the shoulder. I thought to myself, “How lucky this portion has a shoulder.”

Not a day passes where I do not witness accidents or close calls. Today [Feb. 27] as I unloaded groceries into the passenger side of my car, an elderly woman pulled through one space into the next so she could face out. Every space was open, but she parked so close that I could have been crushed between cart and car door. She could not open her door until I carefully backed the cart out.

Yes, this is an older community and many learned to drive when traffic was lighter. Taking one’s keys away is not fun. But driving to the store and back takes just as much skill as driving to Portland. Would you want them to drive to Portland?

On my drive home on Center Valley, I signaled to turn left onto Egg & I, while a northbound car was signaling to turn onto Egg & I. As we both made our turn, a car behind the other car decided to drive on the shoulder, nearly broadsiding me. They hit their brakes and waited the three seconds for the northbound lane to clear.

I lived about 55 years in King County. The ratio of bad drivers there seems a tad bit less. Over 47 years of driving, slightly more than 1 million miles, coast to coast and border to border, sadly, this is the most dangerous place I have ever driven.

Please take the keys away from drivers that are not responsible enough to drive, no matter the age. You don’t want to lose them.
