On Monday, May 29, the American Legion observes Memorial Day in the same manner that it does every year.
Butch Clarberg, first vice commander of the Port Townsend chapter, noted that Legion members and other volunteers would be planting flags on veterans’ graves at the Fort Worden and Laurel Grove cemeteries at 10 a.m., before joining the local Veterans of Foreign Wars to do the same at the Gardiner cemetery at 12:30 p.m. and the Chimacum cemetery at 3:30 p.m.
In between the morning and afternoon cemetery visits, the Legion hall, at 209 Monroe St., hosts Memorial Day services at 11:30 a.m. with a band. Doors open at 10:30 a.m.
Clarberg reported that last year’s event drew nearly 300 attendees.
“We pay tribute to each of the branches of service, our commander gives a speech, and we hand out about 20 quilts of valor to veterans,” Clarberg said. “The ladies sew up the quilts and then actually wrap them around the vets, which is sweet. It’s all very moving.”
