A Jefferson County Superior Court jury failed to reach a verdict against a Sequim man charged with first-degree attempted rape of a child and second-degree attempted rape of a child.
David Lee Sprague, 35, was one of 10 men arrested after multiple law enforcement agencies launched operation “Net Nanny” against suspected child sex predators in March 2018.
Sprague had previously stood trial on the charges, but his first trial earlier this year also resulted in a hung jury.
Sprague allegedly answered a Craigslist ad in March 2018 where he corresponded with an undercover Washington State Patrol sergeant who pretended to be offering her 12- and 8-year-old daughters for sex.
His attorney, however, said Sprague had gone on Craigslist before for sexual role playing with other adults, and that Sprague was not guilty of the charges.
The second trial on the two felony charges started July 15, and the jury was dismissed after it couldn’t come to a verdict on July 23.
The Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office has not decided if it will seek a third trial.
“We set the case over for a month so we could review it and decide what step to take next,” Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Christopher Ashcraft wrote in an email to The Leader.
