Lady golfers hit the links in PT, Disco Bay

The Port Townsend and Discovery Bay women’s golf clubs have kept up their games through the spring and summer, according to Dee Sweeney, who acts as spokeswoman for both groups. May 23 saw the Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club playing a game called “Blind Nines,” in which nine of the 18 holes are selected at random, after play, by a non-player — in this case, Jeff Kent, the U.S. Golf Association Pro at the Discovery Bay Golf Club. Those nine holes are then subtracted from the total net score, which is the gross score minus the handicap. First place for the remaining nine holes was a tie between Sheila Kilmer and Wanda Synnestvedt, who both had a net score of 30, while second place went to Jane Guiltinan, with a net score of 31. On June 13, the Discovery Bay Women’s 18-Hole Golf Club played “from the fore-ward,” with silver tees for the week’s game, instead of the usual red tees. There was a four-way tie for first place, with a net score of 63 each. The winners were Guiltinan, Sweeney, Starla Audette and Sheila Kilmer, while Barb Aldrich came in second with a net score of 65. And just a couple of days before, on June 11, the Port Townsend Women’s Nine-Hole Golf Club played a game called “Hate ‘Em,” in which each player converted their scores to par on one par three, four and five. First place went to Betty Gassfield, while Sweeney came in second, Vicki Young was third and Aldrich placed fourth.
