Kiwanis Club: It’s growing, and Rhody is coming

Five new members who joined Kiwanis in April tied the local club for the honor of being the largest Kiwanis Club in one of the largest districts in the world. The club now has a roster of 112 members, which is a tie with the Steilacoom, Washington, club.

For information about Kiwanis and the local club, see ptkiwanis.org.

The recipients of this year’s Rilla Phillips Scholarships, given in amounts from $1,000 to $5,000, will be selected and notified soon. Applications closed a week ago for the $20,000 that was budgeted by the Kiwanis Club for this year’s scholarships to selected Jefferson County senior high school students.

May starts out with the second annual Community Prayer Breakfast, presented by the Kiwanis Club of Port Townsend, beginning at 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 4 in the Parish Hall of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1335 Blaine St., Port Townsend.

Tickets for the breakfast and program are $10, available by contacting Don Olsen at 379-6700.

Dr. R. Scott Puhn of Poulsbo is the event’s guest speaker. Pastors Ron McClung of Peace Lutheran Fellowship and R. “Skip” Cadorette of First Baptist Church are the guest clergy. Special music is presented by Gospel Opry, along with Jimmy Sparechange and The Cactus Guy. Breakfast is prepared and served by the Knights of Columbus.

RHODY FESTIVAL

May also ushers in a host of fun projects for the club during this year’s annual Rhody Festival. Kiwanis sponsors and organizes the Kiddie Parade on Friday, May 19, followed by the club’s second annual Brats & Brew event (all ages) from 4 to 8 p.m.

The menu includes a brat, veggie brat or hotdog on a bun; beans; coleslaw; onions; sauerkraut; and coffee, water or soft drink for just $10.

Two kinds of beer and wine are offered for $5. Questions may be directed to Jan Carter at 643-1186 or momsbank@hotmail.com for the Kiddie Parade, and to Dave Crozier, 531-0557 or david_crozier28@msn.com, for the Brats & Brew event.

Rhody festivities wind up with the club volunteering at one of the water stations for the annual Rhody Run. Members also participate as they’re able in other Rhody Fest events.

The members of the Kiwanis Club of Port Townsend are very proud that another Kiwanian couple was selected as Rhody Festival Senior Royalty by the Port Townsend Senior Association for their community service.

Mary and David Crozier are four-year members of the club and have received many awards for their amazing service to the club and community. Both are also in leadership positions in the club.

There are always fun things going on with the Port Townsend Kiwanis Club. We’re looking forward to working with Camp Beausite Northwest for five weeks in July, the “Christmas in July” fundraiser on July 22 with Freddy Pink to benefit the Kiwanis Club’s Kids’ Christmas projects, and also the Classic Car Show on Aug. 19. More info is to come on those next month.

We stay busy and have loads of fun together.
