February isn’t just the month to celebrate love and romance for Kiwanis members in Port Townsend; it’s another month to celebrate our work with youth in our communities.

On Sunday, Feb. 19, the club will present its 30th annual Stars of Tomorrow Show, featuring Jefferson County’s most talented students. It all starts at 3 p.m. at the Port Townsend High School auditorium.

Program chair Mary Crozier explains, “The show is for our talented kids in Jefferson County and gives them the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience.”

The children in the Presentation Division (kindergarten-grade 6) display the results of their dedicated practice. Those in the Junior (grades 7-9) and Senior (grades 10-12) Divisions compete for scholarship money.

Local judges who are working in a variety of arts genres have the difficult job of deciding which acts will receive the awards. Many of the acts are also selected to perform at local venues around the area later this year, such as the Jefferson County Fair and the Thursday Concerts on the Dock sponsored by Port Townsend Main Street Program. Don’t miss this year’s show – tickets are available at the door.

Snow Sports Program. This annual program is more than halfway through its six-week schedule of skiing, snowboarding and winter fun at Stevens Pass. The participants are having a great year with so much snow in the mountains this year!

Thomas J. Majhan Teen Leaders Awards for 2016. The deadline is less than a week away for submitting nominations for this wonderful program, which recognizes and honors our local teens for their community service excellence and outstanding leadership. The Teen Leaders Awards program is in its 14th year.

mabozak@gmail.com. Nominations must be received by Feb. 6, and the awards ceremony takes place at 3 p.m. on March 5 at the Elks Lodge.

Other club projects to watch for include the 21st annual Kiwanis golf tournament on March 25, which benefits Camp Beausite Northwest, and the club’s Rock & Roll Party on April 8. More on both of those programs is to come next month.

Planning will start soon for the second annual Brats & Beer event during Rhody Festival and the Classic Car Show in August. There are always fun things going on with Kiwanis Club of Port Townsend.

The Kiwanis Club is proud to have welcomed 11 new members in just the first four months of its fiscal year and now boasts a membership of 106 members, making it the third-largest Kiwanis club in the Pacific Northwest Kiwanis District.

More hands are always welcome to do the work of helping Jefferson County youth. As we say, #Kids Need Kiwanis. Watch for more exciting news for our kids coming this year.
