Keep movin’ on, until you get to breakfast | Life in Ludlow

Posted

Were you so enamored with the political conventions the past couple of weeks that you have failed to get outside and enjoy some great weather activity available recently? I hope not.

BJ and I have been trying to get in some walking around the neighborhood.

After a couple of years struggling with one kind of back pain or another I am up to walking the Pioneer Drive loop, about 1.1 miles. That makes BJ happy and the folks at Active Life giddy since they will soon be relieved of enduring my weekly visits.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago BJ got one of those “watches” that keep track of the steps you take, the quality of your sleep, and God knows what else. She gets motivation from the watch as it keeps track of her steps and the doggone thing even sets goals for her.

As she went to get into the shower the other day I noted that she still had it on and called her attention to it. She told me she had not taken it off since she put it on. Well, duh.

Oh wait, she meant since the day she got it and first put it on. I wonder how many steps it logs in the shower?

She went to TJ Plastow’s “Let’s Keep Movin’” exercise class down in the area adjacent to the marina last week. TJ says she is trying to help keep Port Ludlow fit during the COVID intermission.

Many of you already know that TJ conducts exercise classes via the ubiquitous “Zoom” as well as at Evergreen Fitness. Might be a good thing to know when heading outside is not such an attractive option later this fall.

In the meantime, BJ tells me that the folks working with TJ on Monday and Thursday mornings are enjoying the class and keeping fit. BJ’s watch catches every step!

I recently read about an interview with novelist Lionel Shriver who wrote “The Motion of the Body Through Space” featuring the fictional Seranata Terpsichore. Seranata is described as passionate about exercise and other things.

Ms. Shriver notes that the novel’s motto is, “Anyone who does less exercise than you is pathetic, and anyone who does more than you is a nut.”

We kept hearing good things about the Dusty Green Café recently opening at the golf course so we headed up there for brunch last Sunday. It was a great menu, with great food, great service, and a great view since we sat outside.

We were joined by our new neighbors Paul and Kathleen Harrington. In spite of the fact that he is still working out of Bakersfield, California and they are only in town sporadically to enjoy the better weather “I reckon,” (he is from New Zealand so that is my feeble attempt to share his culture), they seem to have taken in many of the area’s highlights already.

They have biked the Discovery Trail and the Larry Scott Trail, taken in the sights at Hurricane Ridge, (they have a great picture of a deer), kayaked in Ludlow Bay and Mats Mats Bay,  and, well, had breakfast with BJ and me at the Port Ludlow Golf Course.

Here is a word for the week. Kakistocracy: “Government by the least suitable or competent citizens of a state.”

Love a curmudgeon, wear your mask, test negative and stay positive!
