Joan passed away peacefully on December 12th, 2024. She was surrounded by family and had just celebrated her 95th birthday the day before.

Joan was born in White Plains, New York to Kathryn and William Hillmann. She attended Valparasio University and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. She met her future husband, George, while attending Valpo. They were married on September 9,1950.

Joan worked for a variety of organizations, including The Girl Scouts of America, University of Colorado, Lord and Burnham, Santa Barbara School District and Century 21 Real Estate.

Joan and her husband moved to Port Townsend in 1992, residing at Kala Point. There she was active in both the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer and Grace Lutheran Church. Joan and George were directors of the Commanding Officer’s Quarters Museum at Fort Worden, volunteered at Centrum, the Jefferson County Historical Society, Northwest Maritime Center and the Port Townsend Visitors Center. She was also a member of Questers International.

Her family certainly misses her kind, thoughtful nature and wonderful sense of humor. She always thought of others before herself, a lesson we all hold dear.

Joan is survived by her three children, Jeanne Thomsen (Barry), Mark Thomsen (Kathy) and Carsten Thomsen (Nicole). Joan was blessed to have six wonderful grandchildren, Ryan, Brandon, Lindsey, Morgan, Yi and Xinhe along with five great grandchildren, Addison, Kate, Makena, Xavier and Sabrina. Joan was predeceased by her husband George, her parents William and Kathryn and brothers William and Richard. Donations in Joan’s name can be sent to the Mukilteo Food Bank…mukilteofoodbank.org. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
