Jefferson County Sheriff's Log | Questionable transactions

Posted

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received 266 calls for service between Saturday, April 8 and Friday, April 14. Below are selected reports.

At 9:18 a.m. Monday, April 10 in Quilcene, a woman said her daughter had stolen her credit card and charged $500 for a motel room. The woman did not know where the motel was located, or the name of the business.

A deputy was unable to determine if a crime had been committed.

The deputy told the woman the daughter could not be contacted without an attorney present under laws passed earlier by the Legislature.

The vacation-rental owner was contacted, and he said he never saw the people who had rented the place. Video surveillance also did not show anyone at the home.

The property owner asked authorities to have the credit card holder contact him, and the person would get a refund of the rental fee.

At 9:48 a.m. Tuesday, April 11 in Port Hadlock, a caller reported a case of fraud.

An email account had been hacked, and the caller was successful in getting a client to stop payment on a check for $1,750.

The caller explained in detail how she discovered the fraud, and believed the scammer was outside the United States. The business changed email accounts and had hired someone to check its computer system for viruses.

All questionable transactions had been stopped and there was no loss of money.

At 2:33 p.m. Tuesday, April 11 in Port Hadlock, a power meter was damaged at a mobile home park.

The caller named a man and woman as suspects and said they had tampered with an electrical pedestal and damaged the meter.

The PUD removed the meter and the utility said it would not be replaced until the panel was repaired. An electrician was summoned to complete the work, and the caller promised to get the cost of the repairs and contact the sheriff’s office once that was in hand.

At 1:37 p.m. Wednesday, April 12 in Brinnon, a theft was reported at the Cove RV Park & Country Store.

Someone siphoned gas from one of the campers owned by the business. Footage of the thief had been recorded on a security camera, and the video will be sent to the sheriff’s office.

The caller requested night patrols in the area.
