Port Townsend Police Log | Purloined pétanque balls

Port Townsend Police received 118 calls for service between Monday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 29. Below are selected reports. 

At  9:26 a.m. on Nov. 23, police received a report of an overnight theft from a job site in the 300 block of Discovery Road. This was the second report of theft from the construction site. The caller reported that four 4x4s were taken, and had an estimated value of about $35.

At 3:04 p.m. on Nov. 23, a woman in the 2000 block of East Sims Way reported that she had been the victim of a vehicle prowl. The woman said she was at an appointment, left her vehicle unlocked and when she returned, found the contents of her Subaru Outback had been tossed around and her wallet was missing along with cash, bank cards and identification.

Approximately $645 worth of cash was believed to have been taken in the prowl, along with a pair of prescription sunglasses valued at $500.

At 3:50 p.m. on Nov. 23, a caller in the 1600 block of 21st Street reported that sometime overnight, their maroon Honda Accord had been stolen. The owner confirmed that the vehicle had not been repossessed, as there weren’t any loans on the car.

Once officers arrived, the victim reported that a bike had also been stolen from the porch a week prior. Police stated that vehicle theft is a fairly irregular occurrence, but that they believe car thefts have been on the rise in 2020. 

At 8:42 a.m. on Nov. 24, staff of a business in the 1800 block of Water Street alerted police to an unwanted person on the property. Officers made contact with a homeless man who was found sleeping on the property.

The man refused offers of additional services from the officers and left on foot. 

At 9:52 a.m. on Nov. 24, a woman in the 4000 block of Jackson Street reported a package theft from her mailbox. The package was confirmed as having been delivered by Amazon the day prior. The contents of the package are unknown.

With a larger number of online purchases expected this holiday season, police advise residents to remember to bring in their packages after they have been delivered.

At 9:53 a.m. on Nov. 25, a woman in the 1600 block of 21st Street reported that she was the victim of a burglary. The woman told police that she regularly allows transients to stay at her residence and at some point someone had stolen medication and costume jewelry from the home. The woman reported that many folks know that she leaves her back door open.

At 9:57 a.m. on Nov. 25, a woman in the 400 block of West Street reported an overnight theft of a wallet from her unlocked vehicle. Credit cards and about $100 were taken in the theft, she said. 

At 11:25 a.m. on Nov. 25, a woman in the 600 block of Hancock Street, reported that two of the tires on her Chevy Malibu had been slashed the previous night. Officers estimated the damage at $150 per tire. 

At 3:59 p.m. on Nov. 25, a man in the 1500 block of Sims Way reported that he had been the victim of a vehicle prowl. Someone had taken the rear plate of his Toyota pickup truck. 

At 4:35 p.m. on Nov. 25, a man in the 1200 block of Van Ness Street told officers that he had been the victim of a vehicle theft after someone took a small leather bag, valued at $100, from his pickup truck.

A set of pétanque balls and a green carrying bag, valued at between $200 and $400, were also taken in the incident.

At 4:57 p.m. on Nov. 25, a man in the 700 block of T Street was the victim of a vehicle prowl. The man told officers that he had left his Subaru Crosstrek unlocked and his iPhone was taken. The phone was an older model and had an estimated value of about $300. 

At 4:43 p.m. on Nov. 26, a 911 call from the 600 block of Hancock Street prompted a police response. The 911 operator reported hearing loud aggressive voices coming from the call. Officers arrived at the scene and found a woman who had been assaulted by a man, and the man had threatened to throw her from the balcony. The woman told police that she had feared for her life in the incident. Officers were unable to locate the man; a report was forwarded to the prosecutor’s office. 

At 8:07 p.m. on Nov. 26, a man in the 600 block of 55th Street told police that his hand-forged axe had been stolen from his residence. The man told police he had seen some “sketchy” people at the skatepark nearby and believed there to be some new “rollers” in town. The man said he had gone to bed the night prior with his axe beside his bed and awoke to find it missing. No indications of forced entry were apparent to officers. The victim estimated the cost of his hand-forged axe to be about $18,500. 

At 12:54 p.m. on Nov. 27, a concerned neighbor in the 600 block of S Street reported that her neighbor’s house door had been left open. The back door and window also appeared to have been broken out and the house ransacked. The caller also said a lock on a shed on the property had been cut. Police said it appears that unknown persons entered the residence searching for valuables.  

At 8:43 a.m. on Nov. 28, officers received a report of a woman outside of a business in the 400 block of Kearney Street who was yelling at customers. The business owner requested the woman be trespassed. The woman reportedly left the scene in a vehicle prior to police arrival. Her behavior was described as extremely aggressive panhandling. 

At 4:21 p.m. on Nov. 28, a man in the 3100 block of Landis Lane said he had been the victim of a vehicle prowl. There were indications that the man had left his Toyota Prius unlocked prior to the prowl. Books, laptops and other items were stolen that had an estimated value of $1,000. 

At 11:16 a.m. on Nov. 29, a woman reported an unwanted person at a residence in the 2100 block of Renee Place. The caller said the owner of the property has allowed a homeless man to live in the back yard for some time, but their relationship has deteriorated. An officer responded to the incident and assisted in de-escalation. The homeless man left on a bicycle and the officer transported his possessions to another location.
