The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received 292 calls for service between Dec. 5 and Dec. 11. Below are selected, notable incidents.

At 10:34 p.m. Dec. 5, police discovered a stolen vehicle in the Irondale Church parking lot.

While patrolling the area a deputy saw a maroon van parked at the church and a woman standing outside the open driver’s door.

Upon inquiring if she needed assistance, the deputy was told she’d pulled over to let her daughter use the restroom. After running the vehicle’s license plate, the deputy learned it had been reported stolen in another county. The woman said the report was a mistake, and the van belonged to her ex-boyfriend. The theft report was confirmed and the woman, 28, of no fixed address, was detained.

She explained she’d gotten into a fight with her ex on Thanksgiving. Then, two days ago, she’d packed her stuff and left in his van without permission, saying she “was just going to the store.”

Police spoke to the man who confirmed the woman had been living with him but did not have permission to take the vehicle, even just to the store.

During a search, police found a sunglasses case in the woman’s jacket which contained a glass pipe and small vial containing a large crystal of what appeared to be methamphetamine. She admitted to being a recovering addict.

The woman was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and a controlled substance and booked into the Jefferson County Jail that same night. Her two small children, who were in the vehicle, were taken into custody by Child Protective Services.

At 2:36 p.m. Dec. 6, police stopped a man for speeding while driving in Forks. The man, 28, was given a warning.

At 9 a.m. Dec. 7, a Port Hadlock resident reported three packages had been stolen from outside their home on Cedar Lane.

It is not the first time their mail has been stolen, they said.

The U.S. Postal Service was notified.

At 10:39 a.m. Dec. 7, police were called by a witness who claimed to have seen a man try to push a woman out of a slowly moving car while driving on Paradise Bay Road in Port Ludlow.

The caller followed as the pair proceeded to a bank where, in the parking lot, police found the woman crying while the man was inside. As neither of them spoke English, a translator was obtained and interviews conducted. Ultimately, it was ascertained an argument about their having to drive to Port Ludlow from Kitsap County to withdraw money had escalated. The woman had become so upset she wanted out of the car, she said, and then opened the door to leave before the man could pull over. He’d told her not to get out while the car was moving, but she was very angry, she said, about having to withdraw money for something he wanted to buy.

It was determined no assault had occurred and both agreed the argument had been only verbal.

Police spoke with the witness, who said the couple’s story was consistent with what they’d seen happen. There was no evidence of assault and police decided no crime had been committed. 

At 6:52 a.m. Dec. 8, a Port Hadlock woman reported her son had broken a window in their trailer and ran away.

The boy, 16, is autistic, according to his mother, and was very upset that his sister had recently moved out. He was not thought to be in immediate danger.

She was connected with a youth-at-risk program.

At 12:58 a.m. Dec. 10, a Quilcene man said someone had taken wood from his property.

The man said he has an ongoing dispute with another man who has been cutting cedar logs on his property. The other man left when asked, but then somebody returned in the night and took what had been cut.

The property owner had photos of the alleged thief and his vehicle, from which police were able to identify him. They spoke to the man and formally trespassed him from the property.

At 8:08 a.m. Dec. 11, a Port Ludlow contractor called police after discovering the lock on his large cargo trailer had been cut and many of his tools stolen.

At 8:52 a.m. Dec. 11, police cited a man for speeding while driving in Quilcene.

The man was driving a truck and was seen by a deputy to be going excessively fast in a 55 mph zone. When the deputy turned around to pull the man over, the truck had turned into a nearby driveway. The deputy pulled over and blocked the driveway, at which point the man, who had been backing up to leave again, opened his door and asked to be let back onto the road. He was visibly shaking, the deputy noted, and pleading to be let go.

When asked, the man said the residents of the house were his customers but he could not provide their name or address.

At last he admitted he was lying. He was cited for speeding.
