Local public health officials reported another death from COVID-19 in Jefferson County on Nov. 23 — the second death of a resident in the county to the disease in a week.
Dr. Allison Berry, public health officer for Clallam and Jefferson counties, said the death reported Tuesday, Nov.23 was similar to the one announced the day before.
The most recent COVID death, she said, “is actually a very similar case to the last one: a man in his 70s who had significant underlying conditions, living in the community.
“He’s received his first two doses but not his booster,” Berry said.
It was the 19th death in Jefferson County attributed to the coronavirus since the beginning of the global pandemic.
The COVID death reported at the start of last week involved a resident in his 70s who had an underlying health condition. Though he had received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, Berry said he had not yet gotten a booster shot.
Last week, Berry again stressed the importance of getting vaccinated against COVID-19.
“We are strongly recommending that anyone over 65 get vaccinated if they haven’t and receive a booster as soon as possible. This is the age bracket where we are seeing waning immunity from the vaccine,” she said.
Thankfully, she added, the boosters are working well.
“Even in long-term care, the residents we are seeing who have received their boosters are either not getting infected or are minimally or asymptomatic,” Berry said.
Jefferson County Public Health reported a cumulative total of 1,297 confirmed cases of COVID-19 Monday — an increase of 15 cases from Nov. 24.
Nine of the new infections were found in Port Townsend residents, with six in the mid-county area.
Most of the new cases — 13 in all — were residents under the age of 50.
The new cases included a person under the age of 12; two residents between the age of 12 to 19; five residents in their 20s; a resident in their 30s; four in their 40s; one in their 50s; and a person in their 70s.
Of the 15 cases since last Wednesday, six were female and nine were male.
One resident remained hospitalized Monday due to COVID-19, according to Jefferson County Public Health.
Jefferson County has seen 78 residents in all hospitalized due to the coronavirus.
Count health officials reported that the county had 51 residents with active COVID-19 cases in isolation.
