The East Jefferson and Port Ludlow fire departments will honor the sacrifice of first responders who lost their lives while trying to rescue civilians during the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center with special remembrance ceremonies this Saturday.

Sept. 11 is the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, and that day in 2001 forever impacted the nation and those serving their communities as firefighters, law enforcement officers and EMS providers.

East Jefferson Fire Rescue and Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue will memorialize the terrible event with a solemn observance at each fire station within both fire districts. 

In hopes of reaching the majority of the community, volunteers in both districts are encouraged to participate at unstaffed stations. 

This year, an invitation has been extended to local law enforcement partners to gather at the closest fire station within their area of responsibility. 

At 8:30 a.m. Saturday fire engines and ambulances will be pulled out in front of the fire stations and the flag will be lowered to half-staff (if at full-staff). 

Although the fire stations are currently closed to the public due to the pandemic, community members are welcome to join in observance while practicing social distancing outside of the stations. 

At 8:46 a.m., Flight 11 hit Tower 1 of the World Trade Center in New York City. 

A one-minute moment of silence will be observed beginning at 8:46 a.m.  Flags will return to full-staff (as relevant) following the observance.
