Jake Beattie, executive director of the Northwest Maritime Center, will discuss the mission, programs and impact of the Center at a public meeting of the Jefferson County Democrats. The members meeting will follow.
"You’ve likely heard about the annual Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival, Race to Alaska and SEVENTY48. But other sailing, training and community programs of PT’s Northwest Maritime Center might not be so familiar," Gary B. Larson wrote in a news release from the party organization.
Beattie, Larson wrote, is a seaman with more than 20 years in sail training. He is a licensed captain as well, with experience on tugboats in Chesapeake Bay and on small coastal freighters delivering supplies to Alaskan villages.
. Beattie will discuss the mission and programs of the nonprofit NWMC – and its impact on the community – beginning at 6 p.m., followed by the JCD members meeting.
NWMC programs also include several local and international regattas, adult training in navigation and piloting, maritime skills training for youth in school and summer camps, and even the recycling of fiberglass boats.
