Ivert Emmanuel Mayhugh, 85 years young, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022, at Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman, Texas.

He is survived by his bride of 63 years, Jeanette Hawkins Mayhugh, both of whom grew up and were married in Port Townsend, Washington. He graduated from Port Townsend High School in 1954, attended Washington State University, and then served in the U.S. Army in Chicago. He began his career with Frito-Lay and lived all around the country including Sacramento, Seattle, Dallas, and Boston. Frito-Lay and PepsiCo Foods International then sent him to lead international divisions in Spain and Japan. Wherever he was, he created community and genuine friendships, always supporting his growing family with unwavering love and devotion.

After family and friends, history was the big passion of his life. He retired after 32 years with Frito-Lay to start their next chapter in life. They ventured to share their love of antiques through the remodeling of a historic building in downtown Sherman, Texas, and the creation of A Touch Of Class Antique Mall in 1997. Ivert has helped memorialize history through his memorable storytelling and preservation efforts, creating their own Outlaw Trails Historical Museum, joining and then later serving as President of the Grayson County Historical Society.

His family would also like to proudly share how talented he was as a painter and woodworker, how kind and patient he was as a husband/father/grandfather/great-grandfather, how much he was respected and admired by all, and his lifelong devotion to his faith and serving God, especially through his generosity to others.

Ivert’s legacy also lives on through his three daughters, Kim Sherwood, Betsy Nickasio and Robee Mayhugh; his five granddaughters, Jessica Nickasio, Jennifer Sherwood, Stephanie Nickasio, Emily Sherwood, and Katherine Greer; and his grandson, Ryan Sherwood, with whom he shared his birthday of May 15 (Ivert born in 1936). He also has seven precious great-grandchildren, Caleb, Grayson, Annabelle, Adeline, Ethan, Audrey, and Savannah.

Ivert’s body will be laid to rest at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Port Townsend, while his spirit joins his two, older sisters, Ila Freitas and Thelma Ellis; and his parents, Hammond and Matilda Dankel Mayhugh, in heaven.

Funeral services were held on March 3 in Sherman, Texas, and March 7, 2022, at the First Baptist Church in Port Townsend, where Ivert and Jeanette were baptized and then later married on Dec. 28, 1958. Condolences and memories can be shared online at waldofuneralhome.com or kosecfh.com.

For all those lucky to have crossed paths with Ivert, please know how much you meant to him. However, if you didn’t have the chance to meet him, know he considered all strangers as friends, friends like family, and family his pride and joy.
