Irene Date died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021 at her home 21 miles southeast of Quilcene, Washington at the age of 99.

Irene was born Oct.13, 1921, five miles north of Poulsbo, at the family home of Paul and Dorthea Schechert. She graduated North Kitsap High in 1939 and went on to get her beauticians license in Seattle in 1940. In 1941 she went to Cordova, Alaska, to work at her sister-in-law Dot’s Beauty Shop. It was in Cordova that she met and married Richard Date. Their 54 years of marriage brought them three children and many locations to call home. From Alaska to Hawaii, onto Virginia and California; till finally in retirement (1970) back home to Washington’s Pacific Northwest.

Always the homemaker, she loved her family, home and gardens. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting gifts for family and friends — many of which are still in use or treasured away. Her favorite love was caring for her growing family with many summer “Granny Camps” at the beach with all her grandchildren, and a “Rock-a-Bye” Granny for a few of her great-grandchildren.

Irene is survived by her sons Tom (Anne) Date and Rick (Cathy) Date; daughter Ke Bruce-Edwards; grandchildren Greg Bruce, Bonnie (Travis) Hitt, Claire (Mathew) Fowler and Rhea (Robert) Hughes; great-grandchildren Katlyn, Emily and Bridget Hitt; Hannah Fowler; Robbie, Rowan and Rhen Hughes; step grandson Mark Edwards, and step great-grandchildren Joshua Edwards and Bri Adamski.

In lieu of flowers, remembrance may be made to Port Townsend Church of Christ, 230 A St., Port Townsend, WA 98368, or Lariat Creek Christian Camp, C/O Ray Hull, 36349 Carter Road, Waynoka, OK 73860.

The family hopes to have a celebration of life during the summer if COVID conditions allow.
