Early Music Festival returns March 8

Two internationally renowned German period instrument soloists return to Port Townsend Wednesday, March 8 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the death of Georg Philipp Telemann, the 18th century’s most prolific composer.

The concert, featuring harpsichordist Bernward Lohr and violinist Anne Roehrig, is the second in the Salish Sea Early Music Festival series. It begins at 5:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 1020 Jefferson St. The two musicians are to be joined by Baroque flutist and artistic director Jeffrey Cohan. The third program in the festival is set for Wednesday, May 17.

Ludlow Artists’ League reception on point

The Port Ludlow Artists’ League’s show “Mightier than the Sword: A Study in Pen, Pencil & Graphite” continues through March, featuring artists Fran Bodman, Jeanne Joseph and Marti Mathis. Jewelry artist James Ferrara, with his organic and nature-formed jewelry, is also being celebrated this month.

All are welcome to the league’s Second Wednesday reception on March 8 from 4 to 5 p.m. in the lobby of Sound Community Bank. Next door, the League Gallery is open from 4 to 6 p.m. The bank and gallery are located at the corner of Oak Bay Road and Osprey Ridge Drive in Port Ludlow.

Youth chorus sings at Meetinghouse

This month’s Meetinghouse Concert features the lively singing of the Port Townsend Youth Chorus, a troupe of 25 students ages 7 and older. The concert begins at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 11 at the Friends Meetinghouse, 1841 Sheridan St.

The evening’s music includes folk tunes, well-known songs and traditional concert repertoire, a few rowdy “kid songs” and individual piano solos.

The chorus is led by local teacher and performer Leslie Lewis, who has directed the chorus since 1995. Singers come from local private and public schools; the group also includes homeschooled students. Diane Thompson is to accompany on piano.

The monthly Meetinghouse Concerts are a benefit to raise money for the loan on the Friends Meetinghouse. There is a suggested donation of $5-$50, with no one turned away for lack of a donation.

Tyrrell, Hutmacher to share poetry

Local poets and friends Nan Toby Tyrrell and Beth Hutmacher read and talk about their poetry at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 8 at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., Port Hadlock.

“I’ve been writing poems since fifth grade when I had a teacher who believed in my words,” said Tyrrell. “What inspires and shapes me is love, loss, windstorms, the suffering of people, the pain of dogs, cats, and horses who have been abused. Personal, deep, soul-wrenching experiences have shaped my work.” Tyrrell has been published in Tidepools, Women’s Work and Bard College’s Psychology Journal.

Hutmacher has left a scattering of haiku in Japan, as well as poems in the anthology “Through a Distant Lens” and in the journals Labyrinth and Jeopardy.

“I notice things: the way shorebirds move in a wave through the sky, the slap of mah jong tiles echoing down the hallway of a small ship in the South China Sea, a woman in a kimono and sunglasses walking through a bamboo forest,” said Hutmacher. “If the images linger or haunt me long enough, I pull words from the air and arrange them on a page to make a poem.”

Trivia on tap at Finnriver

Test your knowledge of books, film and pop culture during an evening trivia contest while you have some fun, food and cider. The event is set for 6:30-8:30 p.m., Friday, March 10 at Finnriver Orchard & Cider Garden, 124 Center Road. The event is cohosted by the Jefferson County Library.

Questions are drawn from the films Life of Brian, Fantasia, Jaws, Goonies, The Big Lebowski, It Happened One Night, Star Wars: New Hope, Rare Exports, Safety Last, Taxi Driver, The Shining and Rear Window. The books include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 1Q84, The Egg and I, Boys in the Boat, The Butter Battle Book, 1984, Artemis Fowl, The Giver, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, The Old Man and the Sea, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 1, Kite Runner, A Thousand-mile Walk to the Gulf, The Name of the Wind, The Outsiders and A Walk in the Woods.

Renowned magician to stop in Ludlow

Seeing is believing, or is it? To take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Port Ludlow Performing Arts has added an unscheduled performance to its already busy season. On Saturday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m., Adam Trent graces the stage at the Bay Club in Port Ludlow. This is a show not to be missed, event organizers said.

Described as Justin Timberlake meets David Copperfield, Trent gives audience-interactive performances that are part magic, part concert and part stand-up comedy, with the fast-paced variety necessary for entertaining today’s theater audiences.

Trent was a star of the hit Broadway show “The Illusionists” and has appeared on “Good Morning America,” “America’s Got Talent,” the Disney Channel, ABC, VH1, “The Rachael Ray Show,” the Travel Channel, the Syfy cable channel, among others.

In addition to his regular TV appearances and more than 300 live shows each year, Trent has a vast history of philanthropic work for which U.S. News & World Report magazine named him “one of the 10 Most Influential Youths in America.”
