Artists on display at ‘FibeRevolution’

Seventeen artists from Jefferson County are showing their work at “FibeRevolution,” a new exhibit at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center. An opening reception and talk are planned for 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16. The show runs through Nov. 15.

Thirty-nine pieces from 26 members of Surface Design Association, North Peninsula Chapter, are on display.

Techniques used in this show include felting, paper making, hand stitching, beading, metalwork, collage, weaving, photography, welding, eco-printing, dyeing, thread painting, discharging and overdyeing, and more.

“The art in ‘FibeRevolution’ communicates some sort of message, emotion or meaning that goes beyond the literal,” said Diana Gipson, exhibit cochair and an exhibitor. “In addition to the statements being made, it’s worthwhile to study the execution and techniques in order to put the work in context. The evolution of the ideas here is exciting, groundbreaking and innovative.”

Participating Jefferson County artists include Barbara Ramsey, Jean-Marie Tarascio, Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry, Elaine Girard, Cathie Wier, Rachel Gaspers, Donna Lark, Pat Herkal, Jeannie McMacken, Mary O’Shaughnessy, Leslie Dickinson, Helga Winter, Cheri Kopp, Joyce Gordon, Diana Gibson, Joyce Wilkerson and Mary Tyler. Artists from Clallam and Kitsap counties also are exhibiting work.

Tell stories with guild

The Quimper Storytelling Guild begins its second season of monthly Third Sunday Story Swaps on Sept. 17. Listeners, those new to this art form, as well as aspiring and seasoned tellers are encouraged to join, said group leader Perry Spring. The afternoon event, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., takes place at the Port Townsend Public Library Learning Center, 1256 Lawrence St.

As many as seven attendees can share a story; there is one 15-minute spot for a longer prepared story; the other six stories are limited to five minutes each. Those wishing to tell a story are encouraged arrive at the beginning to sign up. Listeners also get a chance to participate.

Stories are told, not read, and the use of character voices, gestures, music and props are welcomed. The first part of the session is devoted to socializing and planning for October’s Forest Story Festival in Port Angeles.

For more information, contact Perry Spring at 360-316-9600 or quimperstoryguild@gmail.com.

De Gutes discusses social media at Workshoppe

The Writers’ Workshoppe and Imprint Books hosts author Kate Carroll de Gutes at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 820 Water St.

De Gutes is to discuss and read from her new book, “The Authenticity Experiment: Lessons from the Best & Worst Year of My Life,” just released by Two Sylvias Press. The event is free to the public.

Her book includes essays and meditations on how insidious social media has become in all our lives – with pictures of risotto and bike rides, images of nights at the theater – all of it curated to show wonderful lives, regardless of what is really occurring, according to a press release. The book began as a 30-day challenge, with de Gutes wondering if she could be more honest about her days, in which she used social media as her new back fence, a place where she could stand and talk to her “neighbors” about the good and bad.
