Global vocalist to lead community chant

Port Townsend Food Co-op sponsors an evening with global vocalist Gina Sala at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 18 at the Fort Worden Chapel.

Sala, who has performance credits ranging from Cirque du Soleil to the United Nations, offers a participatory evening of global chants and music. Audience members are invited to sing along – no experience needed – or sit back and listen to the music.

Sala is joined by Bill Moyer on tabla and percussion, and special Port Townsend guests David Michael on harp and Maryann Tapiro on cello.

Vintage jazz band plays 3 concerts

Husband-and-wife vintage jazz act Sundae + Mr. Goessl returns this weekend for three concerts in Port Townsend at Cellar Door, the Pourhouse and on the radio.

The Seattle-based Kate “Sundae” Voss and Jason “Mr.” Goessl are set to perform 6-9 p.m., Thursday, March 16 at Cellar Door, 940 Water St.; 12:30 p.m., March 17 on KPTZ-FM; and 8-11 p.m., Saturday, March 18 at the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St.

Sundae + Mr. Goessl perform a mix of tunes dating from 1930 to 1960. Voss, who has steeped herself in vocal jazz performance for more than a decade, earned the Seattle Vocal Jazz Princess title in 2014. Goessl is a freelance guitarist who approaches the music with studied curiosity and stamps it with his signature sound.

‘Ringin’ in the Rain’ pours forth March 23

The Townsend Bay Ringers are to shower listeners with “Ringin’ in the Rain,” the group’s fourth appearance in Trinity United Methodist Church’s Candlelight Concert series.

The concert, which features tunes centered on “water-based” themes, begins at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 23 at the church, 609 Taylor St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is a suggested $10 donation (children admitted for free) to benefit local organizations and Trinity’s music and historic Victorian restoration program The group is directed by Judy Schussler.

Salish Spirit spurs Cowboy Ball benefit

Salish Spirit Equine-Assisted Therapy hosts its inaugural Cowboy Ball at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, March 25 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St.

The community is invited to swing to the dance music of local band Three Chords and the Truth, eat a barbecue dinner catered by Mo-Chilli BBQ, and participate in silent and live auctions.

The event is a fundraiser for Salish Spirit to continue its therapeutic-riding program this summer in Port Townsend.

Salish Spirit is a 501(c)(3) organization that has provided therapeutic riding for children and adults in Jefferson County.

Storytelling group forming in PT

To celebrate and cultivate the art of storytelling, Janet Kearsley and Perry Spring are launching Quimper Story Guild, a local monthly gathering for story enthusiasts and tellers.

An initial meeting is set for 3-4:30 p.m., Sunday, March 19 at Port Townsend Public Library’s Learning Center, 1256 Lawrence St. The group plans to gather on the third Sunday of each month.

“Last fall, we began discussion with many local story enthusiasts about putting together a community organization that meets in an informal setting to support the diversity of our community developing our storytelling craft,” said Spring, who, like Kearsley, has been a longtime member of Story People of Clallam County.

The guild welcomes those who are new to storytelling and those who have attended any of the local storytelling events in Jefferson County over the years.

The group also hopes to partner with the library to host a “Tellebration” event in November as part of the National Storytelling Network’s efforts to “bring together each area’s most celebrated storytellers, to delight, captivate and mesmerize audiences with their stories,” according to the network’s mission statement.
