Discovery Lab hosts gathering for homeschoolers

The Northwest Discovery Lab invites homeschooling families to an informal gathering planned for 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 27 at 62A Tanglewood Lane.

The group meets monthly to let the kids play, eat, and share the trials and successes in homeschooling. Families are invited to bring a dish to share, and a board game for kids to play in case of inclement weather.

Kiwanis seeks teen leader nominations

The Port Townsend Kiwanis Club is seeking nominations for the 14th year of the Thomas J. Majhan Kiwanis Teen Leaders Awards program, which was started in 2003 to honor local teens for their community service excellence and outstanding leadership.

During the past 13 years, 140 teens have been recognized for their volunteer service in a wide variety of programs as well as exhibiting superior leadership in their schools. Teens between the ages of 14 and 18 from all areas of East Jefferson County qualify for the awards.

The community service must have taken place in 2016. Suggested activities might include a project benefiting the community, an individual, or a nonprofit group; performing an act of heroism; outstanding leadership in school, church or service organizations; or activities that demonstrate the teen has gone above and beyond for his or her community.

Pictures or news articles of the nominees involved in their community service are encouraged and are to be used at the awards ceremony, according to a press release.

A nomination letter must be received by Feb. 6 and include a complete description of the services performed and the nominee’s leadership qualities. The letter must also include all of the following information: name, address, telephone number, email address and age of the nominee; school attended and grade; parent/guardian name(s); name, address, telephone number and email address of the person making the nomination

The nominees, their families and the nominators are to be the guests of the Kiwanis Club of Port Townsend at a special ceremony and reception to honor them on Sunday, March 5 with selected community leaders to present the awards.

Wild Clovers donates funds to Pet Pals

Wild Clovers 4-H Dog Club has selected Olympic Mountain Pet Pals as its service project recipient for this year.

Each year the club chooses a service project to meet its 4-H requirements. This year the recipient is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to bettering the lives of companion animals in Jefferson County.

The club raised $525 in funds through selling braided leashes and treats for dogs at the Chimacum Arts & Craft Fair in December.

Current members of the club are Sara Wiss, Ava Amos, Grace Yaley, Kim Pratt (of Pet Pals), Grace Wentzel, Emily Amos, Will Yaley, Chloe Lampert, Noah Holly and Hugh Wentzel.

Members are in second through 12th grade and live in Jefferson County. All members have their own dog, which they train and care for. Members spend the year working on community service projects and preparing for the Jefferson County Fair in August.
