The same stretch of highway was the site of two accidents in an hour Jan. 14 due to icy conditions.

The first collision on state Route 104 — near state Route 101, 14 miles east of Sequim — occurred at 7:16 a.m., when a single car rolled over into a ditch, said Trooper Chelsea Hodgson, the public information officer for Washington State Patrol District 8, which includes Jefferson County.

“The passenger, a 76-year-old woman, had a laceration to her head and was later transported to Olympic Medical Center,” Hodgson said.

Eileen Caraballo, communications officer for the Washington State Patrol, added that both the passenger and the uninjured 80-year-old male driver were Port Angeles residents. “The vehicle, a 2001 Jaguar XJ8, was heading eastbound,” Hodgson said. “It was going too fast when it hit a patch of black ice, and it lost control.” Caraballo added the Jaguar crossed the center line and went into the ditch on the westbound shoulder. State troopers had arrived on the scene to investigate the collision, along with an aid car, when a second collision occurred at 7:54 a.m. “It was a pickup truck, also heading eastbound, also going too fast,” Hodgson said. Caraballo added the 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup was being driven by a 74-year-old man with a 65-year-old female passenger, both Sequim residents. “The truck impacted the aid car, basically sideswiped it, while the two firefighter/EMTs, the passenger and the driver from the first collision were all inside.” In spite of this, Hodgson said, there were no additional injuries as a result of the second collision. Hodgson cited this incident as an example of what can happen when drivers are inattentive in poor driving conditions. “Even if it’s sunny out, if the temperature is at or below freezing, you have to expect there’s going to be ice on some parts of the road,” Hodgson said. “Drivers need to be more alert regarding their surroundings, especially when they see emergency lights and state troopers on the road.”
