I won’t fall for this divisive tactic | Letter to the editor

Yesterday, normally quiet and peaceful Port Townsend was not quiet and peaceful at all!

A parade of cars and trucks drove through town with flags flying and horns honking. Other people were blocking traffic by having a “sit in” on the crosswalk. You could tell that the people in the crosswalk did not like what the people in the cars and trucks were doing and vice versa. People on both sides were hollering profanities and gesturing with the finger.

I think a lot of this has to do with the upcoming election. People are becoming angry at those who do not agree with them, even to the point of killing, as recently happened in Portland.

As a Christian, who follows the example of Jesus, I ask myself how do I fit in? Should I be in the parade of cars or do I join those sitting in the crosswalk? Somehow, I do not see Jesus in either group, certainly not yelling profanities and gesturing.

One thing I do know, the devil is still alive and division is his game. Over the millennia, he has had a lot of practice and he is very good at it. He knows his time is short and he is pulling out all the stops.

Knowing his divisional tactic, I will not fall for it. I will continue to start my day by asking God to fill me with His Holy Spirit that I might bear the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. I will vote for who I think is best and will respect the right of others who see things differently.
