How to feel older

About 10 days ago, a seminar was held at the Doubletree Hotel at SeaTac for all of the “presidents-elect” of the 91 Rotary clubs in the local Rotary district.

The district is international as it encompasses all the clubs from Chehalis north to the end of Vancouver Island. As an “assistant governor,” “AG,” I carry responsibility for communications between the district staff and the leadership of the seven clubs on the northern end of the Olympic Peninsula. Those clubs include two in Port Angeles, two in Sequim, two in Port Townsend and my own East Jefferson Rotary Club. In my role as AG I attended the seminar at SeaTac and actually spent time with local presidents-elect Paul Wynnkoop, Carla Caldwell, and Katie Ottaway.

I left the seminar early Saturday afternoon and drove to Ballard to pick up two grandsons, a trip that included my first drive through the new tunnel under Seattle. I can report at this time there is no visible graffiti! I suspect that will change. I retrieved the grandsons and headed for Port Ludlow so they and I could witness the seventh annual “Adorables” performance at the monthly Beach Club potluck. Not only was the show delightful, but also our daughter and son-in-law could have a night out in Seattle while the grandparents babysat. Sunday morning found the boys at the pool with BJ before heading to Seattle to return them to their parents.

Our daughter and son-in-law picked us up at the ferry in Edmonds to treat us to lunch at Anthony’s. We were there in the early afternoon, so the restaurant was not crowded and we were afforded much time to talk and enjoy each other.

We inquired about the activities of our daughter and son-in-law the previous evening, hoping they had taken advantage of the free babysitting and the freedom to sleep in on Sunday morn.

On Saturday evening, they went for a beer with another couple in Ballard. The other couple left early since they had children at home, so our daughter and her husband were left to enjoy each other’s company while they had another beer in this establishment. That is when they noticed they were the oldest people left. When your kids tell you they were drinking someplace where everyone else is younger, yes, you will feel older!

Ruth Irvin corralled me at the Beach Club potluck to introduce me to the brand new pastor at the Port Ludlow Community Church. His name is Brent Hirschy and claims to be a Husky fan. He and I share being “husky” but I suspect I am not as big a fan as he.

The annual ritual by members of the movie industry celebrating their own achievements by voting awards to themselves was last week. The broadcast from Hollywood was about three hours and at times proved what Truman Capote said: “It’s a scientific fact that if you stay in California you lose one point of your IQ every year.”

Love a curmudgeon and have a great week!
