Honor the Meetings Act

Kudos to The Leader for calling on Jefferson County government to do the public’s business in public. As the paper noted, county staff and commissioners spent over three hours last Monday behind closed doors while deciding to issue a carbon copy of their December 2017 moratorium on “Commercial Shooting Facilities” and issue a press release.

Those are hardly the kind of decisions which need to be shielded from public view and likely don’t even meet the closed-door exemptions of the State’s Open Public Meetings Act.

To build public trust and confidence in their decisions, elected officials should always try to conduct as much of the public’s business in public they can. Three un-interrupted hours of secrecy is difficult to understand.
