High Tide Chess Club forms in PT

After moving to Port Townsend from Seattle over the summer, Casey Buck wanted to find and join a local chess club. But there were none to be found. “The last club in town was Last Exit on Kearney, and they had been running for a multitude of years,” Buck said. “I tried to get in touch with the founder, and after some hunting around I eventually found his number and was able to get in touch with him. He gave me a whole bunch of really helpful advice and, especially, a huge library of chess books to donate to the club. That was sick.” In September, Buck founded High Tide Chess Club, which meets from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays in the basement of the  Bishop Victorian Hotel, 714 Washington St., in Port Townsend. There is no fee to participate in the club. “I really wanted to get something off the ground and do a positive thing for the community, and for people to get together and play this ancient game,” Buck said. “Everyone is welcome regardless of their skill level or age range.” David Shiah, also a new resident in Port Townsend, said he is “glad there is a chess club here.” For more information, send an email to hightidechess@gmail.com.
