Melinie Perry will be the guest speaker at the Port Ludlow Art League next meeting in April.
Perry studied fine art at Western Washington University, but her artistic roots stretch back to growing up in a highly creative family.
Her artwork portrays the breathtaking scenery of the Hawaiian Islands, from plants and birds to landscapes and archaeological remains, and her paintings emphasize the need to preserve the islands’ flora and fauna that are threatened by tourism.
Studying Hula, a sensuous mimetic Hawaiian dance, helped Perry capture Hawaiian culture in vibrant, saturated colors, and her portraits often focus on the emotion captured in a single moment.
During the upcoming program, Perry will share her process of creating realistic paintings that embrace the drama and contrast between light and shadows. She’ll also share cautionary tales on how to succeed as an artist in a business-oriented world.
The program meeting is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 19 at the Port Ludlow Beach Club. The Beach Club is located at 121 Marina View Drive. There is a $5 fee for guests.
