Harvey L. Caldwell was born Feb. 15, 1937, in Raleigh, North Carolina, and went home to God on Feb. 4, 2022, in Pueblo, Colorado. He was just short of turning 85. He’d survived a difficult childhood, cancer, sickness, broken bones, and heartache in his 85 years. Ultimately, COVID, a tired body and worn-out heart took him Home.

On Dec. 21, 2021, he left Port Hadlock, Washington and moved to Pueblo, Colorado to live the remainder of his days with his family to make new memories with his two daughters and their families.

When people met Harvey, the first thing they would know is he was a God-loving American. He sported his crosses and his Red, White and Blue for all to see and he was most proud to be a veteran of the United States Army. People from every social standing and age group were in Harvey’s circle of friends. On a summer’s day, he was often seen visiting with his buddies in Port Hadlock under the plum tree. He was one of the most non-judgemental, happy people in town. His smile was infectious and to hear his still-strong Southern accent was spirit-lifting. Two of his favorite lines: When asked how he was doing, “Pretty good for an old feller.” If you said, “God bless you,” it was, “He ALWAYS does!” All the while, he was smiling.

Harvey was in Washington for more than 50 years. He’d lived in Renton, Sequim, Quilcene and then Port Hadlock. One couldn’t find a more dedicated Christian man. He visited seven church services every week and would visit the jail to talk to the inmates before COVID put a halt to gatherings. If the doors were open, he was in the church, worshipping God. That’s what he lived for.

There are many people that Harvey leaves behind that he cherished. Great people that offered much love and support from the San Juan Baptist Church of Port Townsend, of which he was a member for many years. Port Townsend Seventh Day Adventist Church is one that he visited for a number of years. Upon its opening in Port Hadlock, Harvey regularly joined in worship at the Church Untied. He always spoke very highly of the congregation and Pastor Micah.

Harvey left a large family behind and is survived by his five children. John Ray Caldwell was born in Germany, in 1960, and he did not survive. Barbara Caldwell Mullins (David), of Charleston, West Virginia; Peggy Caldwell Mascaro, of Charleston, West Virginia; Christopher Caldwell (Diana), of Pueblo, Colorado; Janet Caldwell Helmick (Ken), of Pueblo, Colorado; Janice Caldwell (Al) of Pueblo, Colorado. There are 20 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren living and three deceased.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at The Church United, 1820 Irondale Road, Port Hadlock, WA 98339. (Next to the laundry mat.)
