Hard times for a pool

The pool survey shows that 10.1% of Jeff County supports a pool tax. That’s 60% of the 18% of residents who filled out the non-obligatory survey, according to County Commissioner Greg Brotherton in The Leader (April 16). Why should we spend millions of dollars on pre-tax-approval design, personnel, hype when the chances of rejection are so high? Sure — the idea of a swimming pool for school children, seniors, the disabled, is attractive. But these are hard times, financially, for the huge local population of retirees, and real up-front needs take precedence over “wants” such as an aquatic center. Brotherton might take a look at the plan we already paid a half-million for when the PT mayor and city manager tried to push an aquatic facility onto the city.
