Off and on, I’ve lived in Port Townsend for 10 years.
I had heard of Carol Hasse, but I’ve never met Carol Hasse, I’ve never talked to Carol Hasse, I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen Carol Hasse, so I was surprised at how moved I was at hearing that Carol Hasse had retired.
Upon reflection, I realized that all I had heard about Carol Hasse, over the years, had cemented in my mind the fact that she was one of the special ones, the stones that make up the foundation of the boating community here in Port Townsend: strong, durable, solid, not flashy, but whose presence is always felt, reassuring us that all was right in the world.
When a stone is removed, as in Carol retiring, the foundation will shift a little and we will feel a little out of sorts, as if blackberries would suddenly cease to be. Wait a minute, something’s wacky here. But we will recover, the foundation will right itself, but let’s hope Carol’s presence lingers around the boat yards for a long, long time.
