Happy campaigning

Many candidates have announced their plans to run as elected officials for different seats throughout Jefferson County.

Beginning on Monday, those who have announced will have to officially file to have their names on the August ballot.

The filing period runs from May 14 to May 18.

At The Leader, we are strong believers in providing fair, ethical and unbiased coverage in all of our stories, including coverage of those running in the upcoming election.

Reporters have been eager and willing to write stories when people have announced their intention to run for each seat. They will be continuing to write stories to update readers on those who have officially filed as well.

Throughout the campaign season, The Leader will be covering all public debates where all candidates for that particular seat are invited to join in.

And, of course, there will be coverage of the outcome of the races.

However, something we are changing up a bit this year is coverage of individual candidate public meetings – such as meet and greets, event appearances, campaign parties and so on.

This is to allow for fair coverage of each candidate. If one candidate holds seven meet and greets and they are covered in The Leader, while a candidate running for the same seat only holds one event, the coverage would be uneven on our end.

For candidates wanting to get their individual events in the paper for their constituents to be aware of, they can do so by contacting our advertising department.

As we strongly believe in fair reporting, we believe those filing will do their due diligence to run a fair, clean campaign for all open seats in Jefferson County.

Those running will be elected to represent the voters and their thoughts – this includes the actions of the candidates representing each district.

Other important dates for candidates to be aware of during the filing period is May 21, which is the last day a candidate can withdraw from filing.

The Secretary of State will certify candidates to the County Auditor by May 22.

So, happy campaigning, candidates! The Leader looks forward to following you through this journey!
