Recently, I Googled “gutter replacements” after not finding anyone locally to replace ours. A response came quickly and I set up an appointment. I asked about “seamless aluminum gutters” and the switchboard person said the estimator would bring all the samples. When the person came, he had one sample of a leaf-protector-type gutter. He put his iPad in front of me with what appeared to be a stock photo of a “perfect” family without introducing them, as if it were a prop.
His brow furrowed as he performed his calculations, then came up with $11,100—more or less—which he tried to keep me from seeing, a little tease, I suppose. Then he said he could get a “one-day-only special” just for me. He “called” his manager, saying “I’d like to make the best deal for Carol.”
At this point I let him know it was too much money and implied that our meeting was finished but he quickly interjected that he had another “special” that would bring the cost down by 20%.
At this point I reiterated that it was a good product but not affordable. He gave me a mean look and then demanded that I go to his company website and give him a rating, which I did: “_____ knows his product. However, it’s too expensive.”
At that point he packed up and quickly left, leaving our front gate open wide.
An update is that we found someone locally, from Sequim, and we will get our project done for one-tenth of the cost from a national distributor. Another “plus” is that we like to keep our money in local or nearly local businesses.
