Quilcene businessman and former school board member Greg Brotherton will join the Board of Jefferson County Commissioners as the District 3 representative.

Brotherton received 11,843 votes, 68.45 percent of the vote, while his opponent, Jon Cooke, received 5,458 votes, 38.4 percent.

“I’m going to jump into more learning, and spend as much time as I can with staff and elected officials,” Brotherton said, explaining that he is looking forward to learning as much as he can before he begins as commissioner in January. “I’m also going to go tour some other counties to see how they do some of the things that we struggle with and that we thrive with, and I want to get some other perspectives.”

Brotherton will replace Commissioner Kathleen Kler, the first female chair of the board. Kler announced March 9 she would not run to retain the seat.

“I feel thrilled and very excited,” Brotherton said, after Jefferson County Auditor Rose Ann Carroll announced the results of the race.

A Quilcene School Board member for four years, Brotherton highlighted his experience  with budgets and making partnerships with community members during his campaign. He said he hopes to ensure the county has a responsible, transparent budget.

Brotherton, a graduate of The Evergreen State College, has opened four businesses in the District 3 area since 2011, including the Quilcene Village Store, which brought back the town’s one and only gas station and added local and organic grocery options. He also opened the first recreational Cannabis shop in Jefferson County, called Sea Change Cannabis in Discovery Bay, as well as the Disco Bay Detour, a new all-ages theater in Discovery Bay.
