If you happen to be downtown Saturday afternoon and hear cannon shots coming from Port Townsend’s Memorial Athletic Field, have no fear – the miniature artillery piece is simply part of the annual steampunk festival that’s taking over the streets June 9-11.

And if the cannon shots don’t alert you to the annual festival, the outfits of leather, lace, brass and goggles you’re bound to see steampunk-enthusiasts rocking surely will.

The Brass Screw Confederacy event, taking place at different locations in downtown PT, brings together steampunk artists and entertainers from around the region for a weekend of panels, author talks, live music, art, gritty history and whimsical flights of fantasy.

There’s the Steampunk Chautauqua, offering panels on the state of the art; the world premiere of “Brass Bolts: Dollymops and French Apaches,” a short film about steampunk; the swashbuckling adventures of BOOM! (Brotherhood of Oceanic Mercenaries) with its piratical percussive presentation; and the mechanical contrivances of Tactical Croquet (miniature golf meets croquet). The Bodgers’ Grande Exhibition is a juried makers’ fair that draws artisans and creators from across the country.

SCAVENGER HUNT

Special for kids is a scavenger hunt taking place from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 10 at the Cotton Building in downtown Port Townsend.

On Friday night, the Steampunk Saloon features local bands Hot Damn Scandal, joined by The Crow Quill Night Owls and Rogues End. On Saturday’s bill is the Steampunk Hootenanny with Frenchy and the Punk, Nathaniel Johnstone Band, a burlesque show and an absinthe bar.
