Government’s action on virus is confusing | Letter to the editor

I’m confused when our government states that we are number one and the quintessential democracy the world should emulate and yet:

Our government admonishes China, and other countries, for overpowering democratic demonstrations as our federal government sends federal troopers to Portland, Oregon, and other American cities to quell our democratic expressions.

We have one of the worst COVID-19 outcomes in the world, even worse than some Third World countries, yet we have the largest pool of wealth, resources, and talent on the planet to curtail the damage.

It is clear that our economy is overwhelmingly consumer-driven, yet consumer-dependent corporations get the resources consumers need to support those businesses.

Governments seem quite capable of enforcing discrimination laws at lunch counters yet are unwilling to enforce the use of masks for public health and safety.

I’m really confused.
