Gordon Neilson

He walked this world with a kind heart; humble and reticent. There was much we never knew about him. But this we did know: A Marine, he lived a life of service above self, with honor, courage and commitment, always faithful; Semper Fi! A gentleman, his words were wise and comforting and helped us all to make conscious, thoughtful decisions. A Vietnam vet (three voluntary deployments), superb grant writer, public transit advocate, wooden boat enthusiast, rigger and skilled craftsman, caring educator; a serious man, but always with a twinkle in his eye, willing to fall on his sword for a cause, champion of the underdog, a coffee snob and a damn good friend, generous with his time and interest in you. A profoundly connecting Elder to many. He placed stepping stones as directions for our lives that we could continue the path for others to follow.

Gordon was meticulous about “holding space” for people, assuring that all had a voice. He listened with more than ears and his laugh was like music. He would ask, “How are you managing?” instead of “How are you?” His tendency was to witness and wait quietly when others would jump in, letting the process unfold. But he knew when enough was said. He captured the Port Townsend zeitgeist.

We miss him, but feel his presence often. It was an honor to have him in our lives.

Look to the water for him now.
