Glass is trash?

Why does glass have to be trash? There is some urgency to getting glass recycled again since it appears much of our recycled plastic is sent abroad to be used as fuel. Despite the accustomed route for glass recycling no longer having commercial value, is there another route to the same objective: glass recycling? Is there a business out there able to grind the glass down to sand-like size and then sell the end product? Could that silica be used to “sand” our icy and snowy roads? Is there some kind of agreement that could be worked out with our more populous neighbor, Clallam County?

There is a good chance the county public works department has already studied alternatives to the now-defunct glass recycling route. If so, then The Leader should do a story on why glass can’t be recycled through a process not yet utilized. If not yet studied, why not prepare a Request For Proposal regarding this topic to see what results? Perhaps the “Students for Sustainability” at the high school could start the ball rolling on this topic as their 2025 project?
